Norway’s owner Østensjø Rederi sealed a contract with Astilleros Gondán in Spain for the construction of a next-generation offshore tug, scheduled for delivery in the first quarter of 2028.

The newbuild, a Skipsteknisk ST 933 design, will be 50 m long, with a beam of 17 m, a bollard pull of 150 tonnes and a DP-2 dynamic positioning system.

To remind, Østensjø Rederi has a fleet portfolio of tugs/mooring vessels, offshore service- and construction vessels, and accommodation vessels.

As informed, the tug will be equipped with a diesel-electric hybrid propulsion system and prepared for methanol fuel.

The project also focuses on crew comfort, with high-standard accommodation for 14 crew (10 single cabins, 2 double cabins) and special care taken to reduce noise and vibrations.

This new contract is part of a collaborative relationship spanning 20 years between Østensjø Rederi and Astilleros Gondan.

“The newbuild represents a major step in further strengthening our offshore towage fleet,” said Kristian Helland Vea, chief executive officer of Østensjø Rederi. “Building on our extensive experience from tug operations, we have focused on developing a tug that delivers both the capacity and reliability required for offshore tug operations, meeting the demands of tomorrow. This tug checks all the boxes, and the combination of high bollard pull, advanced hybrid propulsion, and large winch capacity ensures exceptional operational flexibility and capacity.”
