The Hamburg-based shipping company Vega-Reederei has ordered ten 3,800 dwt diesel-electric Coasters, designed by the Dutch ship design group Conoship International.
The newbuilding contracts have been signed by leading Chinese state-owned manufacturing group Sinomach Group, recognized as a Fortune Global 500 company.
Deliveries of the new ordered vessels will start as early as August 2024 until May 2025, on a monthly basis.
Vega-Reederei is known for their large series of “Black Boxes” drycargo coasters of about 3,000 Dwat in the 1980-1990’s, and the German shipping company will now operate a 100% newbuilding fleet for a market-re-entry in the European short-sea coaster trade.
Conoship mentions that the powering and propulsion of the vessel is by means of electro motors in combination with diesel generator sets.
The propeller has a large diameter ensuring, in combination with a ConoDuctTail® and the optimised hull lines, the best possible efficiency, and lowest possible fuel consumption.
The design also provides the possibility of integrating the eConowind-unit, which can lead to fuel savings and emission reductions. Furthermore, these vessels can also be easily upgraded to full-electric by replacing three main engines with green power sources like hydrogen cells.
