The Netherlands shipping group Vertom has placed an order at Chowgule Shipyards in India on November 18 for four geared tweendeckers.
The Rhoon-based group, which operates a fleet of over 100 vessels with a loading capacity ranging from 1,500 to 12,000 dwt, expects to take delivery of the new vessels in 2027 and 2028.
Upon delivery, the 10,700-dwt geared tweendeckers will be deployed on the Europe Caribbean Line (ECL) liner service -which connects Europe with the northern coast of South America- operated in partnership with Vertraco Shipping, the managing-and commercial agent of Europe Caribbean Line (ECL).
Vertom highlighted that the vessels, specially designed to handle a mix of breakbulk and dry bulk cargoes, will be powered by Tier III-compliant engines incorporating an SCR system to meet IMO regulations.
“These vessels, featuring cutting-edge diesel-hybrid propulsion systems and advanced hull designs, are built to comply with IMO Tier III regulations,” the statement of the company reads.
The propulsion system will consist of a main engine and two diesel-electric gensets.
Additionally, a 910 kWh battery package will be integrated into the propulsion system.
Each vessel features a gross hold volume of 14,243 m³, offering optimal space for dry cargo, Vertom said, and breakbulk / project cargo operations.
“Geared tweendeckers are essential for our fleet renewal strategy as we replace the current vessels on the ECL service. By leveraging our earlier collaboration with Chowgule, we have identified the most innovative and sustainable solution currently available for this route,” Vertom CEO Arjan de Jong commented.
“Recognizable by their pink design, these ships will become a distinctive presence on their route between Europe and the northern coast of South America,” the CEO added.
