Tanker experiences engine failure near Cape Kandilli Point in Istanbul Strait

The Hong Kong-flagged tanker crude oil tanker Tenacity Venture en route to the Romanian port of Constanta encountered problems with the engine.

According to reports received by claims specialist WK Webster, the crude oil tanker (IMO: 9773052) experienced an engine failure near Cape Kandilli Point in the Istanbul Strait, Turkey, on August 14.

Tugs were dispatched to the incident area to tow the 2017-built (114439-dwt) vessel to the Büyükdere anchorage area, Turkey, for inspection and possible repairs.

“Vessel traffic in the Bosphorus has been suspended in both directions following an engine failure on the MT Tenacity Venture. The vessel has been relocated to anchorage at Büyükdere within the Strait. Traffic is expected to resume 15 August 2025 at 23:30 LT,” the Dubai-headquartered GAC Group, a provider of shipping, logistics, and marine services said in its Hot Port News (GAC Hot Port News).

WK Webster warns now that possible general average / salvage and associated recovery issues may arise as a result of this casualty.

Furthermore, it recommends its clients to contact them if they are concerned with any cargo on board this vessel.

Turkey’s Directorate General of Coastal Safety (KEGM) reported the incident on its social media account X, giving details of the whole operation.
