The Marseille-based shipping liner CMA CGM Group, a global player in shipping and logistics, is refreshing its fleet with 2,000 teu vessels.
The container giant took delivery of the first ship under the name CMA CGM Mermaid in a series of ten cutting-edge 2,000 teu container ships with a unique design.
The LNG-powered and ready for low-carbon fuels ship is the first added to the container liner’s fleet out of ten which will progressively be positioned in the Mediterranean and Northern Europe for transporting goods over short distances, facilitating modal shift from road to sea.
The maiden vessel, CMA CGM Mermaid, alongside the rest of the fleet will be delivered progressively up until February 2025, and they will primarily serve Northern Europe and the Mediterranean.
The company described the ship in a short statement as a ‘novel design’ that enhances energy efficiency and environmental performance of the vessels by up to -20% CO2 emissions, in line with the group’s decarbonization strategy.
“A unique design, the result of collaboration between CMA CGM, Chantiers de l’Atlantique, and Hyundai Heavy Industries, which heralds a new generation of container ship,” reads CMA CGM’s statement.
“This groundbreaking initiative propels us towards our net-zero carbon objective by 2050,” it added.
