In a groundbreaking move, MSC Mediterranean Shipping Company has become the first container carrier to operate 1,000 ships as it extended its lead at the top of the carrier rankings amidst continued market uncertainty driven by the Middle East crisis, according to data driven market intelligence provider for the container shipping industry Linerlytica.

This unprecedented achievement marks a significant leap forward in the global container shipping industry.

According to Alphaliner’s global figures, the fully cellular fleet has exceeded 6,700 ships for the first time in history: 6,706 vessels in active operation, carrying 33.6M TEU. The total fleet capacity across all vessel types sits just under 34 Mteu.

Alphaliner’s public Top 100 is a real-time ranking of the world’s major container operators, including vessel counts, fleet capacities, orderbooks and market share.

The real-time ranking shows that on April 14, 2026, the container shipping industry has reached another milestone with 7,528 active ships (34,031,275 TEU) – including 6,715 fully cellular (33,610,085 TEU fully cellular).

Privately held MSC, the world’s largest shipping group, revealed on Monday that its ownership was transferred from its founder Gianluigi Aponte to his son and daughter, Diego and Alexa Aponte, both of whom are Italian nationals brought up in Switzerland and currently residents of the country.

Gianluigi Aponte will retain his role as executive chairman of the group, with MSC remaining focused on its core business, ocean freight.

“I am incredibly proud of this historic moment,” founder of MSC and chairman of the group Aponte said in a statement.

Founded in 1970 by Gianluigi Aponte, container shipping line MSC has 675 offices across 155 countries worldwide and a fleet of 1,000 vessels.

The MSC Group’s activities now include overland transportation, logistics and a growing portfolio of port terminal operations.

MSC’s shipping line sails on 300 trade routes and calls at 520 ports, carrying some 30 million TEU (twenty-foot equivalent units) annually. The MSC Group, including its passenger businesses, employs 200,000 people worldwide.

What’s next for MSC? The company is set to surpass the 1,000 ships, market analysts say, further enhancing its dominance and reshaping the future of global shipping.
