Containership encountered an incident at Turkish Port during docking

Taiwan-based container giant Yang Ming Marine Transport Corporation issued a statement yesterday regarding the incident at Evyap port in Türkiye.

As it is reported, Yang Ming was notified by the shipowner that the chartered vessel “YM Witness” made contact with the pier and gantry cranes during berthing operation on 16 March 2024 at the port of Evyap, Türkiye.

To remind, the General Directorate of Maritime Affairs revealed the incident on its social media account mentioning that on Saturday at 15:45, the Hong Kong-flagged container ship named “YM WITNESS”, a 368 meters long ship, encountered an incident at Kocaeli Evyap Port during docking, leading to the toppling of port cranes and containers from the ship to fall into the sea.

Yang Ming said that according to the shipowner, there are no casualties following the incident, and no marine pollution has materialized for the time being.

“Whereas navigational behavior and seamanship are under the supervision and management of the shipowner, administrative enquires and a full investigation into this incident are currently conducted in conjunction between shipowner and the relevant maritime authorities,” added the company.

The subject vessel is deployed on Far East to/from Mediterranean service route, MD3 service.

According to information obtained by the General Directorate of Maritime Affairs of Türkiye the port authority started investigations at the scene.

“There was no environmental pollution,” the Turkey’s authority also added.
