The results of the survey on maritime accidents on Greek Merchant ships of 100 gross register tonnage and over, as well as the results of the survey on persons injured on board of ships and in areas under the competency of port authorities, for the year 2023 gave the Hellenic Statistical Authority (Elstat).
More specifically, as regards the maritime accidents on Greek merchant ships of 100 GRT and over the following are observed:
• In 2023, 13 maritime accidents were recorded on a respective number of Greek merchant ships of a total tonnage of 114,810 GRT. The ships suffering the accidents represent 0.72% of the Greek merchant fleet and 0.31% of the total tonnage.
• Of the 13 ships on which an accident occurred, 1 was cargo ship, 10 were passenger’s ships and 2 “other.”
• On 7 ships the accidents were due to engine damage, on 1 ship to crash, on 3 to strand and 2 to other cause.
As regards the persons injured on board of ships or in areas under the competency of port authorities the following are observed:
• The number of persons who were injured on board of ships or in areas under the competency of port authorities amounted to 161. In 2023 compared with 2022, a decrease of (8.0%) was recorded. Out of 161 persons who had an accident in 2023, 113 (70.2%) got involved in a fatal accident and ended up.
Out of 113 persons who were fatally injured, 110 persons were in sea areas under the competency of port authorities and 3 were on board of the ships. Accordingly, out of 48 persons who had non-fatal accidents 33 persons were in sea areas of port authorities and 15 on board of the ships.
• As regards the age of the persons injured on board of ships or in sea areas in 2023, the most (110) were 65 years and older, recording an increase of 18.3% compared to 2022.
• Out of 18 persons injured on board of ships in 2023, 3 persons were fatally injured while 15 were slightly injured (contusion, strain, fracture, burn or scald, amputation, and other cause). Out of 143 persons who were injured in sea areas under the competency of port authorities 110 persons were fatally injured (drowning or other cause of death), 9 persons suffered contusion, strain, or fracture and 24 other injuries.
Furthermore, the total number of deaths from drowning increased by 18.1% (from 72 to 85), in 2023 compared with 2022.
