Iranian state media has claimed an Iranian container ship was struck by an unidentified projectile in the Strait of Hormuz early Sunday, killing one crew member and injuring four others, amid an ongoing battle between the US and Iran for control over the crucial energy chokepoint.

State media cited the governor of Qeshm Island as reporting the casualty following the attack near Hengam Island in the Strait in the early hours of Sunday, while UKMTO separately reported an attack by an unknown projectile on a vessel transiting Hormuz.

The UK Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) said it had received a report that a vessel had been struck by an unknown projectile while transiting the Strait of Hormuz.

The crew were evacuated by local authorities after a fire broke out onboard the vessel following the attack.

UKMTO said the condition of the crew, the extent of any damage and the possible environmental impact were not immediately known. It did not identify the vessel or say who may have fired the projectile.

The reports from Iranian state media and UKMTO did not immediately establish whether the two incidents referred to the same vessel.

The EU Maritime Security Centre Indian Ocean (MSCIO) also received a report of an incident at approximately 23:00 UTC on September 12 in the Strait of Hormuz.

MSCIO advised vessels operating in the area to maintain heightened vigilance, adhere to BMP-MS, and report immediately any suspicious activity or relevant information to MSCIO and UKMTO.

US military blockade of Iranian ports hits milestone, CENTCOM says

U.S. Central Command announced Saturday that the ongoing military blockade of Iranian ports has redirected 100 ships.

“CENTCOM forces have redirected 100 commercial vessels over the past 60 days since America resumed the steel wall blockade against Iran,” it wrote on X.

“ZERO ships have passed through the blockade without U.S. forces allowing,” CENTCOM added. “American service members remain laser focused on this mission.”

Iran’s foreign ministry announced on Friday that Iran would be attending a meeting with other Persian Gulf littoral states in Oman on Monday, at which the future of the Strait of Hormuz would be discussed.

Officials stated that the meeting would address issues concerning the region, including the outcome of negotiations between Iran and Oman regarding the designation of safe routes for commercial shipping through the Strait of Hormuz.
