Bulker ship with 16 Turkish crew members sinks in Shanghai

Another ship accident was reported by the Türkiye’s authorities the last days. Specifically, in a short post in the social media it was learned from the authorities that the bulker OMEGA is close to sinking following a collision in the Yangtze River, China.

In accordance with the latest information received 21 crew members, 16 of whom were Turkish, were rescued after leaving the ship with the lifeboat.

As it is reported by Türkiye’s Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure, the Marshall-flagged Omega ship collided with another ship.

In the statement made on the Twitter account of the General Directorate of Maritime Affairs, it was announced that 21 sailors, 16 of whom were Turkish, who left the ship with the lifeboat, were rescued.

The authority said the 48821-dwt bulk carrier named OMEGA collided with the 46645-dwt bulk ship Mirabella.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs also intervened for the evacuation of sailors.

In the official account in X (former twitter) the authority showed a photo of the last position of the Mirabella ship.

Shipping claims specialist WK Webster is telling its clients that it received reports that bulk carrier, OMEGA was in collision with bulk carrier, MIRABELLA in a position approximately 16 nautical miles north of the estuary of the Yangtze River, China on 23 January 2024.

“MIRABELLA is a bulk carrier loaded with approximately 45,000 metric tons of iron ore and is believed to have been en route from Tuticorin, India to Taicang, China at the time of the collision.

“It is reported that OMEGA sustained water ingress as a result of a breach of the no. 5 cargo hold and is in danger of sinking. There are currently no reports of the extent of damage, if any, to MIRABELL,” said WK Webster.
