Update: A 738-foot cargo vessel, the Pan Viva, is currently anchored and stable. The US Coast Guard reported that weather is anticipated to subside today, and Pan Viva will assess weighing anchor. USCG and partner agencies are still staged to respond if needed.

The ship, with 21 people aboard, was reported in distress 2.3 miles northeast of Unalaska, battling extreme weather conditions.

In response to the dangerous situation, a coast guard MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter crew evacuated four crew members, transporting them to Dutch Harbor.

Meanwhile, the coast guard cutter Stratton (WMSL 752) is standing by in Udegak Pass.

The Coast guard is closely monitoring the situation, prepared to act if the storm worsens and the ship’s position becomes unstable.

“A tug is underway to meet the vessel and discuss potential for getting underway. High winds persist but seas have reduced in the area,” said the Coast Guard on Sunday October 13.

The Coast Guard also said the vessel has managed to anchor and maintain stability, however, the intense weather conditions raised concerns about the ship running aground.

The Pan Viva has not reported any mechanical failures, and there have been no environmental impacts thus far.

“The USCG is working with state and local partners and the Pan Viva to ensure safety of the mariners and the marine environment,” the Coast Guard said in a post in the social media X (former twitter).

As it is reported, the coast guard continues to evaluate the situation pending any developments.
